Madeira events and festivals

A year-round calendar of anchor events, month by month.

Madeira does not have one big festival season. It has a calendar: a large event roughly every month or two, from Carnival in February through New Year's Eve fireworks in December. Each one below has its own full guide with confirmed dates, programme and tips. This page is the map. Follow the links for the detail.

In short

Madeira runs a year-round calendar of anchor events: Carnival in February, the Flower Festival in April and May, the Atlantic Festival's fireworks in June, the Wine Festival across August and September, the Columbus Festival on Porto Santo in September, the Nature Festival in October, and Christmas and New Year celebrations from December into January. Each event has its own dedicated guide, linked below, with the confirmed dates, full programme and practical tips.

The calendar, month by month

The seven events below are Madeira's main annual gatherings, ordered by when they fall in the year. Tap through to any of them for full dates, what happens on each day, and where to watch.

Frequently asked questions

Is there ever a month with no event in Madeira?

Rarely. The seven anchor events above cover most of the calendar, and smaller local festivities (parish patron saint days, seasonal markets) fill in the quieter months. If you are travelling outside these dates, ask us what else is on.

Do I need tickets for these events?

Most street events, parades and fireworks displays are free and open to the public. Some specific activities within the Wine Festival or Nature Festival programmes may require booking. Check each event's own guide for details.

Which event is the busiest for travel and accommodation?

New Year's Eve is the single busiest week of the year in Funchal, followed by Carnival and the Flower Festival. Book flights and hotels well ahead for any of these three.

Can DMC Madeira build a trip around one of these events?

Yes. We plan itineraries around the festival calendar, including viewing spots, transport on event days and matching experiences for the rest of the stay.
