What to expect
Madeira is a garden suspended in the Atlantic, and spring is its show season. For a month, downtown Funchal fills with floral carpets, installations and scents, culminating in parades with floats covered in living petals. The most moving moment is not the parade: it is the Wall of Hope, when hundreds of children dressed in white build a wall of flowers as a symbolic appeal for peace.
Tips from people who live here
- Choose the second parade if you can. It is identical in production and usually less crowded than the first.
- The floral installations deserve a whole morning outside parade days, with the city calm and better light for photography.
- Combine with the gardens. If you are coming for the flowers, Palheiro, Monte and the Botanical Garden are at their peak.
- Accommodation: the parade weekends are in maximum demand. Book early, or choose the weeks in between, when the city is still decorated and the prices are different.
