The busiest week of the year on the island. Here is how to plan around it.
The New Year's Eve fireworks are on 31 December 2027, over the bay of Funchal, and it is one of the largest pyrotechnic displays in the world, recognised by the Guinness World Records. But the celebration starts weeks earlier, and it is worth planning for more than just the one night.

It is not only the night of the 31st
For Madeirans, December is the festival of the year, and Christmas begins long before New Year. The illuminations turn the Funchal amphitheatre into a city of light seen from the sea, the markets and exhibitions fill downtown, and there are traditions worth as much as the fireworks: the dawn missas do parto, the carne de vinha d'alhos perfuming the houses (see our guide to traditional Madeiran dishes), and the Night Market on 23 December, when the whole of Funchal takes to the streets until dawn.

- Where to watch the fireworks: the seafront fills, but the display is designed to be seen from the amphitheatre. Hillside viewpoints, balconies facing the bay and ships at anchor give the best perspectives. From the sea, on a boat, is the premium version.
- Book very far ahead. Accommodation and flights for the week of 26 December to 2 January sell out months in advance, and the prices reflect it.
- Bring an elegant extra layer. The party is outdoors and the December Atlantic breeze makes itself felt after midnight.
- Stay for Cantar os Reis. On 5 January, in the Municipal Gardens, this is the tradition that closes the season and that almost no visitor sees.
