For four days, Vila Baleira returns to the late fifteenth century, with historical reenactments, street theatre, acrobatics, a period market and Columbus's landing staged at the water's edge. The date is one of the best combinations in the archipelago's calendar: a major festival, sea still warm, and no summer crowds.
What it is, and why it is different
Christopher Columbus lived on Porto Santo in the late 1470s and married the daughter of the island's first captain-donatary. The festival celebrates that connection, but what makes it special is the scale: on an island of around five thousand inhabitants, this is not a spectacle staged for visitors, it is the whole island taking part. The streets of Vila Baleira transform, the population dresses in period costume, and the result has an authenticity hard to find in larger historical reenactments.
Why September is the right moment
The Atlantic at these latitudes cools with a delay: in late September the sea off Porto Santo is often better than in June, and the 9 km beach is free. Combining the festival with two or three days of beach, golf or a wellbeing programme with therapeutic sand is the best possible use of this week. Tips from people who live here

- Stay, do not come for the day. The festival comes alive in the late afternoon and evening, once the day visitors have gone home.
- Accommodation on Porto Santo is limited. On a small island, in the week of its biggest event, booking early is not optional.
