PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo: do I need to book?
The most regulated trail on the island, explained.

The rules specific to PR1
The route between the island's two highest peaks was partially closed for conservation work for months, with walkers only able to go from Areeiro as far as Pedra Rija, and reopened in full in April 2026 with its own status: a higher fee than other trails, exclusion from the multi-day passes, and reinforced checks at the entrance, where rangers can ask for your digital confirmation. The booking works the same way as for other routes, but with one practical difference: here, booking at the last minute rarely works.
The trail, without filters
PR1 deserves its reputation. The traverse along the ridges, between staircases carved into the rock, tunnels and a sea of cloud, is one of the most spectacular walks in Europe. It also deserves honesty: roughly 7 km one way, with serious elevation change, near-continuous steps, exposed sections protected by railings, and tunnel passages where a torch is not optional. Instagram shows you the sunrise. It does not show you your legs the next day. With decent fitness and stable weather it is entirely achievable. With thick fog, strong wind or any kind of hurry, it is the wrong route to insist on.
The logistics nobody explains
The detail that catches almost everyone: PR1 is a linear trail. It starts at Pico do Arieiro and ends at Pico Ruivo, whose exit is at Achada do Teixeira, nearly an hour's drive from the starting point. Your options, in order of sanity:

Add the parking factor: Areeiro is one of the protected natural areas under capacity management, and the car park fills early. One more argument for arriving without your own car, especially at sunrise, when a mountain road at 5am is quite enough adventure already.
If it is sold out, or the weather does not cooperate
- PR1.2, Pico Ruivo via Achada do Teixeira. The honest shortcut to the island's highest point, far shorter and more accessible. Summit views for a fraction of the effort.
- The Areeiro viewpoint without the traverse. Sunrise above the clouds does not require the 7 km.
- Change mountain. Fanal, Balcões or Ponta de São Lourenço make memorable days when the ridge is closed. Check the IFCN pages on the morning itself.
Best season and conditions
Summer brings more stability and more competition for slots. Spring and autumn trade some predictability for quieter trails. In any season the rule is the same: above 1,500 metres it can be 10 degrees colder than Funchal, the wind is in charge, and the sea of cloud that makes the photographs can also swallow the trail in minutes. Layers, water, torch, humility.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book PR1 on the day?
Technically, if slots remain. In practice, in high season, do not count on it. Book weeks ahead, especially for sunrise.
Do children pay?
Under 12 do not pay, but must be included in the booking. As for bringing them: this is a demanding traverse. For families, PR1.2 is the sensible choice.
What if IFCN closes the trail on my day?
You are entitled to reschedule or request a refund through SIMplifica, provided you deal with it before the booked date.
Does the 3-day or 7-day pass include PR1?
No. PR1 always has its own separate ticket.
