What to do on a cruise stop in Madeira

First, the arithmetic of time
Before choosing a plan, do the maths of the day: actual disembarkation time, "all aboard" time, and a safety margin of at least 60 minutes. Madeira is mountainous, so distances in kilometres deceive, and 30 km can mean 45 minutes of road. That is why the plans below are organised by time available, not by distance.
With 3 to 4 hours: Funchal on foot
Without needing transport, the day is already worth the call.
- Zona Velha, the old town with its famous painted doors, a few steps from the port.
- Mercado dos Lavradores, flowers, exotic fruit and the daily theatre of the vendors. Try the custard apple or the banana passionfruit, and haggle with a smile.
- Cable car to Monte plus the wicker toboggans, the classic combination: ride up with the amphitheatre of Funchal at your feet, then descend in the celebrated wicker sledges pushed by the carreiros. Kitsch? Perhaps. Unforgettable? Certainly.
- A pastel de nata and a poncha (in moderation, the return to the ship will thank you) to seal the visit.
With 5 to 6 hours: the near west coast
With organised transport, you enter postcard territory.
- Câmara de Lobos, the fishing bay Churchill painted, 15 minutes from Funchal.
- Cabo Girão, the glass skywalk suspended 580 metres above the sea, one of Europe's highest promontories.
- Curral das Freiras, the hidden valley in the heart of the island, with a stop for the famous chestnut cake and liqueur.
With 7 to 8 hours: deeper Madeira
A long call lets you touch what makes the island unique: a short, accessible levada in the Laurissilva forest (a World Heritage site), or the route to Porto Moniz and its natural lava pools. But the latter only with an operator who knows the timings to the minute and guarantees the return. This is not a route to improvise by taxi with the clock running.
The classic mistakes on a port day
- Underestimating the mountain, planning "just one more viewpoint" and discovering it is 40 minutes of bends.
- Ignoring the busy days. When several ships are in port, the cable car and the market fill between 10am and 1pm. Invert the route and start with whatever is furthest away.
- Taxi without an agreed price. The port taxis are professional, but always agree the fare and the return time before setting off.
- Testing the poncha seriously. The local drink is treacherously easy to drink. Save the second one for a longer visit.

Does the ship dock or is tendering required?
In Funchal, ships dock at the quay. Direct disembarkation, no tenders, on virtually all calls.
Is there time for a levada?
On a call of 7+ hours, yes, a short flat levada with door-to-door transport. Do not risk long routes independently.
What currency and language?
Euro, and in tourism almost everyone speaks English. ATMs throughout the city.
And if the weather is bad?
The advantage of microclimates: rain in Funchal does not mean rain across the island. A local operator adjusts the plan to whichever coast has the sun.
